O&M manuals written by operators for operators

Electronic, plant-specific manuals with the information operators need and illustrations of your own plant. The manual is the core of our full plant-specific training package.

This is the manual your operators get

Plain steps, drawings of the plant, and the numbers an operator needs. Pick a page below. These sample pages are from our fictional White River WRRF.

  • Written by operators
  • Need to know only
  • Illustrated
  • Electronic and interactive
  • Tied to your plant
Sample manual page from White River WRRF: process flow diagram of an anoxic zone and aeration basin with numbered callouts, color-coded RAS, internal recycle, air and WAS lines, instrument tag boxes, a numbered step list, setpoint tiles, a Need to know box and an Operator tip
Process flow

Process flow with numbered callouts

  • Numbered steps match the callouts on the drawing
  • Setpoints and design numbers sit beside the process they control
  • Instrument tags show where the operator reads each value

Sample manual page from White River WRRF: schematic of a digester heating loop showing the digester, sludge circulation pump, spiral heat exchanger with counter-current flow, bypass valve, hot-water pump and boiler, with a numbered list of what the operator checks, a warning and an Operator tip
Equipment

Equipment you can picture

  • Every part labeled, with the flow of sludge and hot water color-coded
  • What to check at each part, in order
  • Warnings sit next to the step where the risk is

Sample manual page from White River WRRF: plan view of a secondary clarifier with numbered callouts tied to the five startup steps, plus the four shut-down steps, a Need to know box, a Warning and an Operator tip
Startup

Startup and shut-down, step by step

  • Numbered steps for each process area
  • Drawing callouts tied to the steps
  • Lock-out reminders are written into the steps

Sample manual page from White River WRRF: digestion and gas troubleshooting table with symptom, probable cause and check or action columns, a color bar showing VA/ALK ratio ranges, a Warning and an Operator tip
Troubleshooting

Symptom, cause and fix

  • Common problems in plain words
  • Cause and action side by side
  • Ratio ranges color-coded so a reading means something at a glance

Sample manual page from White River WRRF: primary digester equipment data sheet, instrument schedule with tags, what each measures and what the operator checks, and a row of operating target tiles
Data sheet

Design data and instrument schedule

  • Equipment data and operating targets on one page
  • Instrument tags with the check an operator makes
  • Built from your plant design data

Electronic

Electronic and interactive

  • Bookmarks and clickable contents
  • Links between sections, tables and figures
  • Process control workbooks that can tie to SCADA

Why operators trust our manuals

We write our manuals to be used on shift. We have been plant superintendents twice, and our manuals are written by operators for operators.

Electronic

Your manual is a file, not a binder. Bookmarks, a clickable contents and links between sections take an operator straight to the section needed.

Interactive

The manual works with our process control workbooks, which are interactive and can be tied to SCADA.

Great illustrations

Cutaways and process drawings of your own plant show where the flow goes, which pump serves which tank, and what each valve does.

Need to know

Each process is written the same way, so operators find operation, valve lineups, troubleshooting, maintenance and safety where they expect them.

Written by operators for operators

We have been plant superintendents twice. We write for the operator on shift.

Plant-specific

Built from your drawings, equipment, SCADA screens and the knowledge of your own operators, not a generic template.

What is in a manual

Each process area follows the same outline, so an operator who knows one chapter knows how to read them all.

SectionWhat it gives the operator
Purpose and functional descriptionWhat each process does and how it fits the plant.
Design dataEquipment, capacities, controls, and the power source and lockout point for each unit.
OperationStartup, shutdown, valve lineups, and how to read the SCADA screens for that process.
Process control and mathWhat to monitor, the operator math, and a process control spreadsheet.
TroubleshootingSymptom tables and step-by-step decision trees.
Maintenance and safetyMaintenance by equipment item, plus lockout, confined space and gas safety.
Competency checksQuestions with answer keys, so a new operator can check what they learned.
Daily round and operator formsRound sheets and review forms that operators fill in and keep.

Illustrations from our manuals

These come from an O&M manual we prepared for an Oregon plant. Each drawing is made for that plant, and each one is there to answer a question an operator asks on shift.

Troubleshooting that follows a method

Operators get decision trees as well as tables. This one covers a high hydrogen sulfide reading at an odor control biofilter: check safety first, then one condition at a time.

Decision tree for a high outlet hydrogen sulfide reading at a foul-air biofilter: seven checks, from verifying the reading and safety through airflow, moisture, temperature, pressure drop, media and pH, and inlet loading, each with the action to take if the check is abnormal

How we write a manual

  1. Kick-offWe meet your team, agree on scope, audience and schedule, and collect your drawings, vendor manuals and existing manuals.
  2. Plant walk-through with operatorsWe walk the plant with the operators who run it and learn how each process is really operated.
  3. Drawings and P&ID reviewWe read the record drawings, P&IDs, SCADA screens and vendor documents, and note where they disagree.
  4. WritingWe write each process the same way: purpose, design data, operation, process control, troubleshooting, maintenance and safety.
  5. Field verification of equipment dataWe check tags, nameplate data and valve lineups in the field. Anything not yet confirmed stays marked until it is.
  6. Operator reviewYour operators read the draft and tell us what to fix. We revise until it reads right to the people who use it.
  7. TrainingWe train your operators from the finished manual, in person at your plant.

The core of the full training package

A manual is one of four parts of our live, plant-specific package: the O&M manual, the training, plant-specific training materials, and process control workbooks that are interactive and can be tied to SCADA. Use the pieces you need, or combine them all.
